West Virginia Transit Agency Makes Environmentally Friendly Choice with Cost-Cutting Propane Vehicles Mountain Line Transit Authority operating five new clean fuel vehicles MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (September 17, 2026) — Mountain Line Transit Authority, a public transportation provider in Morgantown, West Virginia, is showcasing its safe, clean, economical vehicles fueled with propane autogas. “Public transportation — like Mountain Line Transit — is, by nature, an environmentally friendly choice,” said Maria Smith, ceo for Mountain Line Transit Authority. “We want to take it a step further by operating clean vehicles, and propane is a natural choice because of where we’re located.” To fuel the five vehicles, Mountain Line installed a propane station onsite. The infrastructure was provided at no cost by Ferrellgas with a fuel contract. On average, propane autogas costs about 40% less than gasoline and 50% less than diesel. The ROUSH CleanTech Ford E-450 cutaway chassis is the only propane vehicle that has completed the Federal Transit Administration’s New Model Bus Testing Program (“Altoona Testing”), which allows transit fleet operators to access federal funds that cover 85% of the entire alternative fuel vehicle cost with a 15% local match. “The cost to bring propane into our fleet was minimal,” said Smith. Mountain Line’s new propane vehicles will easily navigate the hilly terrain of the region as well as provide reliable cold weather performance during the winter months. Propane vehicles offer unaided cold-weather starts to -40°F and provide a quick cabin warm up. They also have a range of over 350 miles on a single fueling. Propane — which is classified as a clean energy source by the Environmental Protection Agency — is an American-made, recycled, reclaimed, recovered, reprocessed fuel. More than 90% of the United States propane supply is produced domestically. All of Mountain Line’s propane vehicles are certified to 0.02 grams per brake horsepower-hour and emit 90% less nitrogen oxide emissions than the EPA’s strictest standard. EPA and CARB measure NOx, particulate matter, non-methane hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, formaldehyde and nitrous oxide. Propane vehicles equipped with a ROUSH CleanTech fuel system are lower in all eight measured outputs by an average of 64%. “Mountain Line Transit’s decision to diversify its fleet with clean propane vehicles will reduce harmful emissions in and around this beautiful community,” said Todd Mouw, executive vice president for ROUSH CleanTech. “In addition to the environmental benefits, the agency will save big on both fuel and maintenance costs to help stretch its budget and taxpayer dollars.” More than 100 transit agencies around the U.S. operate propane vehicles, making it the leading alternative fuel for the industry.
