Mountain Line Driver Shortage Causing a Limit to Service

 

 Morgantown, WV- Mountain Line is providing reduced service due to a shortage of drivers. The service adjustments are being posted daily on the agencies Twitter feed which can be found by following @MountainLine. For those who do not use Twitter the posts are reflected on the website at busride.org.

 

Our goal is to maintain service to all existing service areas. This may mean a reduction in frequency or elimination of a route where there are alternate routes available. If you need help planning your trip riders are encouraged to contact us at 304-291-RIDE.

 

Mountain Line is currently 25% short on drivers and has openings for at least 12 drivers. The driver shortage has been a national issue and transit agencies across the nation are dealing with the same problem. Federal Motor Carrier Safety rules limit each driver to no more than 10 driving hours in a 24 hour period. All of the current drivers are maxed out on their daily driving and those who can are working 5 and 6 days per week instead of their normal 4 day work week. Mountain Line has implemented a high level of recruitment utilizing every possible channel to promote the open positions. The agency has on order 6 smaller accessible vehicles to allow the hiring of drivers who do not currently have a Commercial Driver’s License. These vehicles will be used on routes which currently have lower ridership  and will allow the agency to provide service while assisting the drivers to obtain their CDL.

Bruce Tripett rides the Gold, Northern Circulator, and Red routes and depends on Mountain Line for their transportation needs. The Mountain Line CAC is pleased to recognize Bruce Tripett as Rider of the Month for August. Bruce will receive a 30 day pass as well as Mountain Line promotional prizes and will be presented with a certificate of appreciation. The CAC meets every other month on the third Wednesday at 1:30 PM via Zoom Meeting and in person. The next CAC meeting will be held September 16, 2026, and all are encouraged to attend. MOUNTAIN LINE TRANSIT AUTHORITY Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: August 12, 2026 Contact: Taylor Johnson, Marketing Coordinator Phone: (304) 296-3680 FALL BUS SCHEDULE BEGINS Morgantown, WV- Mountain Line Transit Authority will resume expanded service hours beginning Friday, August 14 th . Details of the route changes are as follows: Blue & Gold (Route 38): Beginning Friday, August 14 th service will run Monday through Friday from 6:40 AM until 9:00 PM. This service will run throughout the Fall and Spring Semesters including breaks. West Run Express (Route 30): Beginning Tuesday, August 18 th service will run Monday through Friday from 7:10 AM and ending at 8:00 PM. This service will run during the Fall and Spring Semesters excluding breaks. West Run Late Night (Route 30): Late night service begins Friday, August 14 th and will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 PM until 3:00 AM with the exception of Fall, Winter and Spring Breaks. Campus PM (Route 1): Service will begin Friday, August 14 th and will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:00 PM until 3:40 AM with the exception of Fall, Winter and Spring Breaks. Beechurst Express (Route 39): Beginning Friday, August 14 th service will run Monday through Friday from 8:10 AM to 1:10 PM and 2:10 PM until 6:10 PM during Fall and Spring sessions with the exception of Fall, Winter and Spring Breaks. Valley View (Route 44): Beginning Tuesday, August 18 th service will run Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM until 2:30 PM.
