City Cuts Transit Funding

Morgantown, WV- Last week the City of Morgantown informed Mountain Line of a $65,000 dollar cut in transit funding. This 18% cut in the City’s funding support for public transit will require service reductions to several City neighborhoods.

General Manager David Bruffy met with City officials yesterday to present the Authority’s service reduction plan which will go into effect in about 6 weeks, beginning July 2. Initial service reduction plans include elimination of four (4) of the nine (9) weekdays Red Line runs. The Red Line serves Downtown Morgantown, the downtown WVU Campus, University Avenue, the Evansdale Towers complex, Suncrest, parts of Star City, Collins Ferry Road and Colonial Drive neighborhoods. The Authority estimates this service reduction will impact approximately 16,000 rides annually.

Although the Authority must eliminate four (4) daily runs to cover this funding loss, a final decision on which of the nine (9) runs to eliminate will not be made until June 13, 2012 at the Authority’s June Board Meeting. The Authority has set up a public survey on their web site, www.busride.org, to seek public input on the route times to be eliminated and Red Line passengers are encouraged to take the survey and share their preferences for Red Line run eliminations. Initial run times to be eliminated include the 9:00am, 10:20am, 11:40am and 1:00pm Red Line runs. Do to the short time-frame available prior to service reductions, the only Public Hearing on this matter will take place at the June 13, 2012 Board Meeting which will be held at 6:00 pm at the Westover Maintenance and Administrative facility.
